7-a-Side Shield

Scorpions captain, Nicky Cameron, accepts the Herts Fire & Rescue
7-a-side Shield from Chief Fire Officer, Steve Seaber.

The U16 Scorpions squad which won the Herts Fire & Rescue
7-a-side Shield for the 3rd year in a row.

The "Warriors" squad, comprising players from Scorpions, Aylesbury
and Bishop's Stortford, which narrowly lost to Chinnor in the U18 final.

On Sunday 7th October 2001, Scorpions RFC held their 4th annual 7-a-side tournament for Under-16 and Under-18 girls at Datchworth RFC. The tournament, sponsored by Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, attracted nearly 200 girls ranging in age from 12 to 18, with teams from Aylesbury, Beckenham, Bishop's Stortford, Chepstow, Chinnor, Coalville, Fullerians, Milton Keynes, Oxford and, of course, Scorpions. The Fire Service supported the event tremendously with financial assistance, equipment, numerous firefighters and even, at one point, 3 fire engines in attendance !

Despite the very wet and windy weather, the standard of rugby was excellent and even more physical than previous years, which bodes well for the future of the girls game.

In the U16 section, Scorpions, Milton Keynes and both Coalville teams qualified for the semi-finals. In the first of these, Scorpions beat one of the Coalville sides 24 - 0 with tries from Nicky Cameron, Tia Martin and Kate Hammond (2). In the second U16 semi, the other Coalville side beat Milton Keynes 21 - 5. In the final, Scorpions and Coalville played in a hard fought and, considering the conditions, very skillful match. Tries from wingers Claire Mckenna and Chloe Allcorn finally helped Scorpions to a 12 - 0 win.

Chinnor and the "Warriors" (a combined Scorpions, Aylesbury and Bishop's Stortford side) emerged from the U18 group to contest a closely fought U18 final. Chinnor ran out eventual winners, 14 - 5.

The Chief Fire Officer for Hertfordshire, Steve Seaber, was on hand to present the winners shields to Nicky Cameron, captain of Scorpions RFC and Lucy O'Donnel, Chinnor under-18 captain.

Lastly, but by no means least, Scorpions would like to extend their thanks to Datchworth RFC for their tremendous support and hospitality, without which the whole event would not have been possible.
